Before Editing the Q&A page was a little time consuming due all the separation of the questions I had to do. I also had to go through each question and bold it because when I copied the text from word and pasted it into the spread, the bold text did not paste. I also added another embellishment in the bottom right corner to add more color to the page. I made this embellishment into an offer that is located on the back of the magazine to make the spread more realistic, as this is something a professional magazine would have. I determined that Nicole's photo was too close up and it does not show a relationship between her and the background, so I reformatted the spread to wrap around her picture. This made the second page distinguishable from the first page due to the different anchorage of the photo and the text. I also added a heading to introduce the Q&A. I highlighted the header in red to contrast with the orange text on the page.  After

Before After I pasted the story, I had to be mindful of the format of the two page spread. Magazines usually have paragraphs formatted to be side by side with each other, which is what I had to do. I put the first sentence in bold to bring attention to the story, which is a common method used in many magazines. I also put a quote on the side to add extra embellishment to the page. I had to crop Nicole's picture to fit the page, but I still managed to keep the picture a full shot. I attempted to add orange to the page by adding the circle, but I realized I had no meaningful text to add to it, so I had to delete it. I typed my story on a word document and planned what text would go on which page of my two page spread. I planned for the first page to act as background for my story. This includes introducing Nicole and her internship program for young fashion designers at Ringling College in Sarasota. I then introduced the problem, which is that the program has little publicity or funding. This transitions to the introduction to the idea of the annual Halloween fashion show that was created to gain publicity for the work Nicole's students do, as well as show how the event has prospered and helped expand Nicole's internship program over the years. I planned for the second page to be reserved for the Q&A. I got my ideas from the research I did on the questions fashion designers are asked during interviews. Before I designed the table of contents page itself, I wrote a list of the stories I might use on a word document. The goal was to come up with at least 12 story ideas to feature in the table of contents. I took note of autumn-related themes I have seen on social media ads and commercials to brainstorm trend-related stories to appeal to the "young adult" related theme of the magazine. To appeal to the "college-life" aspect of the magazine, I added the mention of midterm advice, because October and November is around the time college students take their midterms, and the mention of sororities, to emphasize that the magazine is meant for a female audience. I then began to design the table of contents. I put a sentence description under each title while still maintaining the tone of a magazine for young adults. As everyone as a group made progress, we began to stray away from having a unified house style. We had different fonts and layouts, so we had an in-class discussion on what styles we should compromise on. I made the most progress on the magazine cover, so everyone agreed to mimic the style I had. Because Jillian made the most progress out of all of us on the other two pages, we conformed to the templates she used for the two page spread. We both had to compromise on the table of contents because we were in the same spot. We did so by choosing a table of contents template that will be easy for everyone to use, which was the one I used already. The things we had to change were that we put a dragonfly logo in the banner to make our style more unique, along with the slogan "spread your wings." We also took out the banner option in the table of contents to make more room for text. Later on for the table of contents, I came up with the idea to put a dragonfly watermark on the tab...

Now that I added Nicole's photo to the cover page, I had to change the colors I originally had. The brown did not compliment the red on Nicole's sweater, or the masthead. The yellow was barely visible. So, I decided to stay with only red and orange, which corresponded well with the masthead and Nicole's picture. I also had to slightly edit the image because the white background was too bright for some of the puffs. I lessened the brightness of the photo slightly to make the words contrast better. I also added a vignette effect to the photo to not only allow the words to pop, but to also add a dramatic effect to Nicole's photo. I also had to change the font of the subheading of each puff as well as the sub headline because the default font, Monsterrat light, did not seem fitting for a magazine; it was plain and unnoticeable. I changed the font to Aileron Regular italicized the font to make the words bolder.

Instead of placing the picture on the side, I placed it on the top to make it look more natural and part of the page. However, because one of the models was wearing a white sweater, the front part of the text "Contents" was difficult to see. I tried to flip the image to see if the white sweater would cover up less of the text, but it made the end of "Contents" difficult to see instead of the front. For the question and answer section in my magazine, I had to be mindful that I had to match the tone of a fashion designer. So, I did research by looking at online question and answer interviews magazines had with fashion designers. I referenced a Q&A from Anna Sui, a well-known 80's fashion designer. The questions were based off of her inspiration, the secret to her work ethic, and her favorite fashion trend. The answers she gave were given in a casual manner. She rarely used any fashion terminology. I was mindful to remember the questions she was asked that I would like the use in my Q&A. I also looked at an interview from fashion designer Petria Lenhan. The questions were based on what inspires her, how she became a fashion designer, where her shows take place, and how she balances home and work. I took the third photo on the fence of Nicole's garden. The designs on the fence made an elegant background for the photo. It made the colors Nicole was wearing pop as well. I did a medium close up shot to catch Nicole's expression in a more personal way. I wanted her face to be seen in natural lighting unlike the other medium close up shot that I took for the cover photo. I was going to have Nicole face the camera and smile but it looked too forced. I then made her make a straight face, but it looked too serious for the setting she was in. For the two photos on the two page spread I wanted the pictures to be elegant, but natural. The picture I took was not Nicole initially posing. I made conversation with her and I took the picture as she looked away laughing.

For the two page spread, I wanted the magazine story to be as if Nicole was being interviewed from her home so the Q&A can be justified to be conversational. I chose to take a picture of Nicole outside on her back porch to make it appear as if her home was an estate. I also wanted to convey the season in the picture. The brown bench and the brick floor give a homey, autumn-like feel. For this picture, I wanted to do things differently by taking a full shot and having the model engage with the audience. Because Nicole has been to modeling school, she knew which pose would be the most elegant. I had her tilt her head slightly to make her look less stiff. The lighting in this photo was perfect because it was in the afternoon and the sun was facing the bench.

This was the first idea I had for Nicole's photo shoot. As we were selecting makeup and jewelry to wear, I resolved that her closet would be a perfect, simple background that would make it appear as if Nicole was getting a professional photo taken. I sat her in a chair in front of the closet and found that the picture was too dark. To fix this, I put a lamp right next to her and stood away from the lamp so my shadow would not be in the photo. I had Nicole turn her head to the side so that her makeup highlights were visible in the light. I also wanted her bun to be visible to give her a professional appearance. I had Nicole pose with her hands visible so that the ring she was wearing could be seen. I wanted her bronze makeup, red sweater, and gold ring to resemble autumn colors.

On the scheduled picture day with Nicole, I took pictures of Nicole at her house and I ended up with three different pictures. One is a full shot while the other two are medium close up shots. I planned for a medium close up shot to be for the magazine cover to make the magazine more personal. I brought one of my red turtleneck sweaters because both the color and type of clothing corresponds with my autumn theme. I helped Nicole with her makeup by choosing colors that would mimic the leaves during fall. Therefore, I mixed dark orange eye shadow with bronze eye shadow to convey the effect. I then pulled Nicole's hair back to capture the effect the makeup had on her face. Because Nicole was supposed to look like a fashion designer, I wanted to give her an exotic look. I did such by having her wear black leather pants and black heels with the red turtleneck sweater. This gave her look a 1990s aesthetic that could rarely be found in 2019. The following week, I was unable to get in contact with Katie and Abby, the other two girls I asked, for a picture day that Saturday. The same day, I got a call from Nicole saying that she was going to be able to be my model for the magazine project. We agreed that I could come to her house Saturday to take the pictures. I came over during the late afternoon and spent about an hour with the photo shoot. At her house, we searched for places with non-distracting backgrounds to take the pictures at. We wanted it to appear as if she is at a fancy estate, so we took the majority of the pictures in her outdoor garden. We had to be very cognizant of lighting because we wanted to make her face and makeup pop. For the picture that would be on the magazine cover, I took a picture of her in front of her closet so there could be a white background and there would be more focus on her face.
